For all the clumsy iPhone users out there Apple brings you some good news.
A patent shows that apple is working on an iPhone with a “self-healing” screen that will be able to fix scratches and dents. The patent was filed by the technology company for a screen as part of its plans to release a foldable version of the infamous iPhone.
Many smartphones users develop scratches and cracks with there phone screens within months of owning a new phone so it is no surprise that Apple is working on technology that would do away with the need for expensive screen replacements which are currently done under warranty for most devices.
Below are extracts from the patent application describing the technology.
“During operation of an electronic device, the display cover layer for the electronic device may be scratched or dented. To improve the aesthetics of the electronic device, it may be desirable for the presence of scratches and dents to be minimized.”
“To help mitigate the number of dents, scratches, or other imperfections in a display cover layer, the display cover layer may include a layer of self-healing material.”
“The layer of self-healing material may be formed across the entire display cover layer or may be formed only in the flexible region of the display cover layer.
“The display cover layer may include a layer of an elastomer in the flexible region of the display cover layer for increased flexibility. The layer of self-healing material may cover the layer of an elastomer in the flexible region.”
“Self-healing may occur in the layer of self-healing material without prompting. Alternatively, the self-healing may be initiated or expedited by externally applied heat, light, electric current, or other type of external stimulus.”
The technology describes that heat may be used to stimulate the self healing process of the screen. Apple has yet to reveal much about the patent application but we can assume we will hear more within the coming years as apple potentially looks to reveal there own foldable smartphone much like Samsung.
